SOMEHOW, THE initiate managed to get to Diana’s street. He stomped up the stairs to her door and collapsed. His legs kept twitching as he lay on the floor.

“Nicholas, listen to me,” a voice penetrated his dismay. It was Diana. She had opened her door and bent down to him. She grabbed him by his shoulders and face to face, looking him in the eye, she began chanting.

Nicholas looked back at her, into her kind, gentle face. He felt her words wash over him. Each one like a lid forcing downward on the violent thoughts frothing in his mind.

How long the two looked at each other, Nicholas could not tell. All he knew was that the longer they did, whatever was consuming him was fading away. Slowly, he calmed.

“Wait, don’t stand up yet,” Diana said after a few more moments. “Give yourself time to heal.”

“I don’t understand how this came about,” Nicholas said. “I have heard about the danger of feedback but never experienced it before.” He paused, “Well, but then, I do understand. I was in too much of a hurry. Do some real magic and impress Randolph about it.”

He looked into her eyes and slowly shook his head. “I am such a fool. I do know that every sorcerer has only a certain number of spells they can perform in a lifetime. I used up one of yours.”

“All I did was cast a simple charm,” Diana said. “One that is the beginning of others more complex.”

“That could be useful in a lot of ways,” Nicholas said. “From time to time, everyone needs help in — well I guess one would say ‘help in calming down.’”

“My mother never mentioned such a use.” Diana smiled.

Nicholas shook his head one final time to clear it. “I am so lucky I have found you.”

“I just was going to see Lionel,” Diana said. “I, I now feel foolish that I have ventured out alone and unescorted before. But one of my — ah, associates has reported where some brandels have been appearing.”

She dipped her chin as her cheeks reddened a bit. “It is a clue to where the queen’s stolen treasure might be stashed. And, well, there is something else more personal I need to talk to Lionel about, too.”

Nicholas barely comprehended what Diana was saying. He looked into her eyes and felt his pulse quicken again. She had not enchanted him at a deeper level, had she?, he wondered.

After a moment, he shook his head. No, that was not it. The growing feeling he felt for her was entirely his own.
